Postpartum Body Plan

This "Babies Ruin Bodies" blog post made me cry! If you have not read it yet beware...it's a tear jerker!

While I know my body will likely be changed forever by this pregnancy, I plan on getting as close to my old self as possible. I am fairly optimistic about getting back to normal. I think the biggest hurtle will be the thing known as "twin skin", which is pouchy belly skin that never returns to normal since it has been stretched so much. Sometimes the only way to get rid of it is surgery, and I've always vowed I'd never get aesthetic surgery of any kind so...I might just always have a reminder of all the love that was once inside me. Or maybe it will go back to normal, who knows.

My goal is to be bikini comfortable by summer time. That should give me 3-4 months. My sisters thought that sounded super ambitions, but I think it's not going to be that hard. This is my plan:

1. Breast Feeding - No joke, breastfeeding twins burns 1000 extra calories every day. Mothers nursing twins need to be careful to not loose weight too quickly so it doesn't mess with their supply, and they need to keep eating enough extra calories to support this milk production.

2. Start getting active as soon as possible. Of course I don't expect to get back to my normal yoga classes or anything right away, but I should at least be able to start taking walks right away, and probably some restorative yoga too.

3. High Intensity Interval Training. This will have to wait a few weeks, but when I'm able, I'm getting back to my HIIT workouts. These are 12 minute super intense workouts. Since they are so short, it will be possible to do them during the girls' nap time. And these HIIT workouts really work. I remember going to a level 2 yoga class and my teacher asking where all my back/shoulder muscles came from. I told him it was from yoga, but really, it was from all the pushups I was doing with these workouts! A few sites I used to follow:
http://www.dailyhiit.com/
http://www.zuzkalight.com/
The personalities on these sites have gotten a little annoying, so I might just make my own workout routines, but you get the idea.

4. Yoga. I don't know how I'll get to yoga class with two babies, maybe it will be a while before I can get to my favorite classes. When I am able, I will get back to it!

5. Diet. I actually don't worry too much about my diet, so I probably wont make any special changes. I enjoy food too much to deny myself such pleasures! Of course, its good to eat everything in moderation.

6. Postpartum belly binding/support - I don't know if this really helps with shrinking a postpartum belly, but some swear by it. At the very least, it will help keep my midsection tight and contained, and hidden! I'm worried about looking in the mirror and seeing a crazy amount of loose pouchiness, so a support band will help me not look and dwell on it.

This was me the day before I conceived...
Aaaaand this is me now. I'm about 35 lbs heaver!
Ugh, looking at these side by side is actually a little depressing. Oh well! I'm on track for the recommended weight gain for twins so I won't worry about this too much ;).
