Twin Pregnancy: Week 17

It’s week 17 of my pregnancy! According to TheBump.com, the babies are each the size of an onion, their skeletons are hardening, and they are putting on some fat. I'm still not really feeling any baby kicks yet, I can't wait for that part. I gotta say, I’m feeling pretty good. I’m definitely feeling more energetic, and in general, bright and cheery. I did have one little meltdown mid-week. I think I just got a big sense of being overwhelmed . The kitchen was dirty, progress on the nursery is not going very fast, I was hungry, I just read an article saying I’ll be poor for the rest of my life, and John seemed detached. All these things left me in a sobbing state of despair. John immediately came to my rescue though, and I got over it quickly enough.

A very interesting question was posed in a multiples forum I started following: “Would you choose to have twins?” To be honest, I’m not sure the answer to this. With twins, there is an increase risk of complications to both myself and the babies. It sounds like there is a very real possibility the will be born premature and will need to stay in the NICU for awhile (although I really hope not). And, instead of really being able to bond with one like I was planning, I’ll have to divide my attention between two. Of course, there will be an extra cost to twins, but I don’t mind that part too much. On the upside, identical twins are not all that common and I’m happy for this relatively unique experience. Also, it’s cool that I get two babies with just once pregnancy. Since I was planning on having a 2-child family, I could stop here and be done! They will always have a built in playmate and (hopefully) best friend. In conclusion, don’t think I would choose twins, but now that it has happened, I’m very happy and excited. I hope that makes sense.

Having twins: it’s like getting something really wonderful as a gift that you would never buy for yourself.

I was bad about snapping photos and making a video this week, but probably I'll have something visual for next week :)
