Camping in Prescott Forest
Yesterday, my Dad, his girlfriend Sally, my sisters, and John all wend on a single-night camping trip! It was a fun adventure. We just thought it would be fun to get out of the city for a day, and I wanted my dad to take some engagement photos of John and I in an interesting location. We chose to camp near Prescott, AZ because it's only about a two hour drive.
We didn't know exactly where we were going to camp, but Dad knew there was camping down Walker Rd in Prescott Valley. We did some exploring and ended up at a "dispersed campsite". We had to travel down a dirt road, which was a little difficult for the Prius but we made it :). One great part about this site is that there are no fees! It's quite primitive though, no outhouses or water or anything. Here's a map of how to get there:
1. Take I-17 N towards Flagstaff
2. Take exit 23B-23C to merge onto I-17 N toward Flagstaff (47.6 mi)
3. Take exit 262 toward AZ-69 N/Prescott/Cordes Lakes Rd/Arcosanti (.3 mi)
4. Merge onto AZ-69 N(30.7 mi)
5. Turn left onto Walker Rd
6. Drive about 4.2 miles and there will be a dirt road on the left to the dispersed camp sites
I think John and I got some great photos that we'll include in our wedding announcements and such. My favorite part about camping is the camp food, and we made some fun dishes. John and I were in charge of dinner, so we made this delicious steak stew using a cast-iron dutch oven in the camp fire. We also tried making cornbread in a skillet wrapped in aluminum foil and placed in the fire, and it was ok. Part of the cornbread was perfect and others were burnt.
We did encounter some mosquitoes, and also some rain. Luckily, the rain was light and happened mostly during the night while we were sleeping. The weather was much warmer than I expected, even at night, I didn't even need any of the warm clothes I brought. We all enjoyed the location, and I would recommend it for anyone looking for a quick nature getaway.
